On Spreading the Gospel

on-spreading-the-gospel

I was planning on posting anything, but for some reason I felt strongly to write my opinion about religious groups, especially Christians, that try to spread their beliefs to others. The reason being is that I read a post that Regina wrote about inappropriate conversion, and though I agree with them on some parts, I find myself standing up for these accused Christians.

Now the girl who wrote the post on inappropriate conversion was a Muslim, and when the Christian group tried to convert her at an Arabic festival, I can see why she was annoyed (and amused) at the same time. However, it’s when self-claimed Christians mock what the group was doing that I got really upset and disappointed. I don’t expect non-believers to understand what those people are doing or even why they’re doing it, but as Christians, we should know why they do it. But when you start saying things like”The bible did not say that everyone has to believe in god. there are other religions too, like Buddhism“, it’s apparent that

  1. people either don’t know the bible at all
  2. people have been taught to the twisted truth

I’m no expert in the bible myself and I’m still learning, but the first commandment of the 10 made it very obvious

You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.

If you are a Christian and believe that God is the creator and ruler of the universe and that the bible is His Word, then you should know that even though the bible doesn’t explicity say “EVERYONE SHALT BELIEVE IN GOD”, it implies it very clearly. Yes there are other religions, but to God and Christians alike, those gods are nothig more than idols that humans have made and decided to worship. And God is so adamant about everyone eventually coming to know Him and believe in Him that in the new testament Jesus says again in Matthew 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

So pretty much the bible is saying, those of you who already believe, good, because now you got to make sure that everyone else knows about God too! This is why those Christian groups go out there and talk to people. They have nothing personal to gain from doing it, absolutely nothing. There are no financial rewards, not even an award on paper or a chocolate medal for doing what they do. But they do it because they know that 1) God commanded them to 2) they just want to share the joy and peace they feel with others. The second part is something that words can’t describe, but any one who has an initimate relationship with God can understand, and it’s just something you can’t keep inside of you. It’s like you want the whole world, or at least your close friends and family who are non-believers to know about it and experience the same kind of joy and peace that you have. I’m speaking from personal experience here.

What I’m trying to say is that people need to understand that these Christians are getting scorned and mocked, and sometimes even physically hurt, for what they do. Haven’t you ever wondered what’s the driving force behind them, why they’re willing to do something like this? It’s not a cult, and it’s sad to hear that even amongst Christians, some would say something like that or have such deep misunderstandings. But all I can say is that it’s not easy, and that it takes a lot of guts. But the bible never said it’d be easy, and in fact Jesus said in Jon 15:18-19

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

Of course, it was foolish of the Christian group to chose to spread the gospel at an Arabic festival. I also don’t like it when they try to force things on to people. Things like this should never be forced, and in fact, it can’t be forced. Sometimes I think they get too desperate and too passionate that they forgot what it was like to be a non-believer.

For the biggest part I agree with you. I am a Christian myself and of course I would love to see that the entire world was baptized and saved by the love that has “saved me”.

This however does not mean that I am not open for other religions. I believe that in the end every religious person (Wether they worship Hindu gods or Allah) worships the same one Higher Power. We humans give different names and different “magical powers” to that one High Power. This is also the reason why I would never go and force my religion upon someone else, who am I to say that their truth is a lie when it’s not 100% solid that my own truth is in fact THE truth.

Also some people appear to be taking this thing a bit too far.. I mean trying to spread the gospel at an Anti-Christian metal festival (for instance) doesn’t sound like a good idea. Those people do not want to hear that Jesus loves them - they all heard it a gazillion times before and they’re not going to change their minds after hearing someone say the same old thing again.. It doesn’t work that way! If someone’s not open for God’s love then he or she’s not going to realize that he actually IS loved.

If that makes any sense :)

I apologize about my mistake. xD I’m no expert in the bible too so I kinda got that part wrong. Whoops!

To Marieke: I completely agree with you that religions and beliefs shouldn’t be forced on anyone, especially not at places where you know the people are firm believers of another religion.

To Regina: It’s alright, people make mistakes. I just felt like I needed to make corrections in case people get mislead.

I can understand how those witnessing wanted to share the love. Having the close relationship with Jesus gives you the love to do so. Sometimes, the place to share needs to be picked carefully, for there are some places that are in-appropriate for such a message. Do not, however, be afraid to witness about the ‘Peace which passes all understanding”, though. Sooner or later there are some who get curious about that peace. All I have to say is -GO GIRL !! God Bless You, and keep reading the bible.

I think that was a very good post. Keep growing stronger in the faith. We must respect others and what they believe, but understand that they are not worshiping God. Keep it up!

As an down to earth, open minded Christian, I don’t find it foolish to spread the word of Jesus in an Arabic Festival. For one, not all Arabics are Muslims. There are many Christian Arabics living in many of the Middle Eastern countries. The other thing is, many Muslims, Hindus and Buddhist do not understand Christianity and not only have wacky ideas of the religion, but know almost nothing about Jesus Christ and how we came to the conclusion on why we believe He is the Messiah. The majority of my friends are Muslims and Jewish, BUT, I am a Christian. The one thing I have taught them is: the Bible states to spread the gospel and that is why Christians go around spreading this Word:) If anyone feels uncomfortable about Christians spreading this Word, they simply are not ready to get real with all of spirituality. Same goes out to Christians. Christians need to get real with Islam.

@ Mrs Pat: Thank you so much for your encouragement! That’s something I’d definitely like to work on, to be a light unto the world and have people be curious. In my opinion, I felt like that was always the best way to be a witness for Christ :)

@ A.J. : Thanks for the encouragements, it really means a lot to me :) I’ll definitely keep growing in my faith, and hopefully I’ll be able to write more about it as time goes on.

@ Neon: I agree that as Christians, we should go out and spread the gospel, but at the same time, there are so many ways and places you could do it. Telling your Muslim and Jewish friends about God is great, because 1) they know your beliefs 2) they know you don’t mean any harm or disrespect. I just feel that doing it to total strangers might come off as a bit extreme. Unless they prayed about it, and God told them “this is the place I want you to go, and these are the people I want you to reach out to”, I still think the festival was a bad idea.

I agree with you, those Christians were mocked for doing what they think is the best thing.(I went to the blog URL you posted and commented there, too.) Granted, them being at an Arabic festival reminds me of the early Christian martyrs being fed to the lions, only this time they threw *themselves* at the lions. But the event also brings to mind how the true disciples of Christ who wish to evangelize walks among snakes and wolves. I’m not saying the Islamic religion is the opposition to Christianity (though I know history says otherwise). Though Christianity is truly about proselytizing (i.e., converting people), I’m really all for tolerance of religions, I don’t believe that I should force myself on other people, though I know that what I know is right. It’s up to the Lord to open the hearts of those to whom Christians talk, anyway. The Christian group what just doing what they thought was what would please God.

@ Ai: I agree with you that it’s completely up to God to open up the hearts of these people, and really, at many times, the only thing we can do is pray for them. We often judge people by what they do and criticize them, but the Lord looks at the heart, and I’m sure whatever intentions the Christian group had, God sees it all, and really, God’s understanding and acceptance is really all they need :)
